Artwork of the Month: On 22 June 1772 Lord Mansfield made a landmark judgment against slavery.
Westminster Hall was the site of the law courts from 1178 until the 1820s. Wooden screens were used to separate the courts from the rest of the Hall. The substantial screen in this image was designed in 1739 by architect William Kent. In 1772, the ‘Somerset case’ was held here. It was heard by William Murray, the first Earl of Mansfield and Lord Chief Justice.
